Background

CSE – School of Water and Waste (SW&W) aims to establish policy principles, innovative technologies and implementation strategies for city-wide water and sanitation management, which will throw the foundations of a water and waste savvy society. CSE also assists the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India as a center of excellence in the field of sustainable water management aimed at mainstreaming reforms and capacity building of state/city officials and released – A Practitioner’s Guide to Water Sensitive Urban Design and Planning (WSUDP).

Central/state governments and local bodies have included WSUDP concepts in programs, policies and notices as a major reform program to fix the broken water cycle in cities. It involves rainwater harvesting at different scales as well as decentralized wastewater and local reuse and integrates the management of water supply, wastewater, stormwater and groundwater. The WSUDP contributes to the increase of water in situ as well as to the fight against floods in cities. Therefore, the approach will not only contribute to building urban resilience, but will also improve the quality of life in cities, especially when considered as part of an overall urban strategy.

Objective

Build a cohort of practitioners and managers (government and private) who will design and implement WSUDP interventions.

Training Highlights

  • Understand the water balance in an urban area at different scales to understand the main water-related challenges and the integration potential of WSUDP.
  • Step-by-step guide to designing and planning rainwater harvesting systems (including decentralized wastewater treatment and local reuse
  • Operation and maintenance and monitoring plan, including understanding of life cycle costs, socio-economic and other benefits
  • Existing and future institutional regulatory framework (policies, plans and programs) for WSUDP
  • Field visit to interact with real implementers and beneficiaries.

Training design:

The training will follow a mixed-method approach including lectures, classroom exercises, interactive discussions, and audio-video training material to compare a city’s current performance against the seven climate-responsive city goals. water. Participants will have the opportunity to plan and design water sensitive urban systems including RWH and SUD as part of ‘Do It Yourself’ – groupexercise.

Participants will receive a certificate of completion upon successful completion of the training program.
