About the role

We have an exciting and rare opportunity within the Space and Transportation Planning Department for a Senior Urban Conservation and Design Officer, whose primary focus is to lead and manage a team responsible for conservation and urban design in two boroughs.

The successful candidate will be an experienced conservation and design professional with the drive, initiative and leadership skills to effectively manage a team.

You will be

  • lead and manage a team of professional conservation and urban design officers;
  • be responsible for managing the work programs of the conservation and urban design team in connection with projects related to conservation, heritage and urban design, including the proper functioning of the design review commissions of the two boroughs ;
  • take responsibility for ensuring that the team executes agreed programs and projects and effectively monitoring performance against agreed objectives, targets and indicators;
  • ensure the team provides high quality and timely advice on issues related to conservation and urban design, including the full range of planning applications;
  • work proactively with the Spatial Planning and Design team leader to identify improvements or efficiencies in the way services are delivered;
  • establish positive working relationships with relevant councillors, senior staff and representatives of community groups, such as the Wandsworth Conservation Area Advisory Committee.

The successful candidate will ensure the team balances the need to preserve and enhance the historic environment, while embracing and supporting the delivery of the next generation of excellent design and architecture, ensuring sustainable growth. in both boroughs.

In addition to demonstrable technical and professional abilities, you will have the passion and energy to lead a team, including strong communication skills, a commitment to providing excellent customer service and achieving the best results for residents through the delivery of high quality programs.

You will need to be highly organized, with the ability to effectively plan and manage projects of varying scale, time and budget. You will need to have demonstrable experience in managing or coaching and mentoring professional staff, and ensuring the quality and performance of a team. You will be solution-oriented and adept at exploring problems, evaluating options and implementing improvements, with a focus on high performance.

You will need to keep abreast of national/regional legislative and policy changes, particularly in light of upcoming town planning reform(s) and proposed changes as set out in the Leveling and Regeneration Bill, which envisages, among other things, the revival of design codes. .

You must have an enthusiasm for technology and innovation and knowledge of recent technological developments in this sector, to enable a transformation towards a high quality and modern digital planning service.
