The Association of Town Planning Consultants of Nigeria (ATOPCON), Lagos State Branch, yesterday deplored the recent attacks on officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) and the Construction Authority. Lagos State Physical Development Permit (LASPPPA) in the Ajao area of Lagos.

He urged residents to refrain from such behavior in the interest of improving physical development across the state. Reacting to the incident, ATOPCON Lagos Branch President Dr. Kola Olayiwola said the most disturbing aspect of the attack was that the officials assaulted were not just government officials of the Lagos State, but on official business, in the performance of their lawful duties.

He said: “Officials were enforcing the Urban and Regional Planning and Development Act and Regulations while removing an illegal Petrol Service Station (PFS) facility located in Ajao Estate in the Oshodi-Isolo Local Council of Lagos State.

“ATOPCON hereby joins other peace-loving Nigerians, especially built environment professionals, in condemning the barbaric act in its entirety. Jungle justice involving brutal bodily assaults and attempted murder of defenseless officials is despicable and totally unacceptable.”

The association therefore urged the state government and the police to arrest those involved directly or remotely with a view to bringing them to justice.

He also advocated for immediate public awareness to building industry stakeholders on the relevance of creating a sustainable environment through well-coordinated and effective development monitoring, as well as law enforcement and land use planning regulations in Lagos State.
