PUNE: Warje Police are looking for the three people, including a woman, for impersonating police officers assigned to the State Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for attempting to extort Rs 5 lakh from a senior officer from the state planning department by threatening to raid his home at 6:30 a.m. early Friday morning.
The planning officer (56), a resident of Karvenagar, lodged a complaint with the Warje police on Friday afternoon.
Senior Police Inspector Shankar Khatake of Warje Police Station told TOI: “The three people, including a woman, posed as police officers from the ACB office in Mumbai. They claimed that they had been ordered to inspect the victim’s property and that they wanted to search his residence.
“However, before starting the search, the trio offered him a solution. They promised not to search his residence and they will not pursue the investigation against the officer if their request is granted,” Khatake said.
“They asked the victim to give them a sum of Rs5 lakh to stop the search as well as the further investigation,” he said.
“However, the officer realized that the trio were not acting like real police. He became suspicious of their behavior and called the police. A police team from Warje Police Station came arrived at the scene, but before the police could reach the scene, the three fled the premises of the company, ”he said.
“We have recovered CCTV footage and are trying to verify the identities of the three people,” he said.
Khatake said: “We suspect the trio could have obtained all the information on the officer before reaching his residence directly. The trio did not call him or give him notice before arriving at his house.
A case of extortion, impersonation and intrusion into the house has been registered against the trio.
