TIRUCHY: T Muthuselvam and EM Dharmaraj were elected chairpersons of the municipality’s tax and finance and town planning standing committees on Friday, respectively. Despite the local public holiday due to the Srirangam Temple Car Festival, members of the two committees who were elected at a council meeting the previous day attended by election officials unanimously chose their chairpersons on Friday.

With the chairman of the finance committee now elected, sources said the Society will soon present its budget. “The president and members are expected to hold their meeting in the next few days and will make suggestions for the budget. If all goes well, we are expecting the budget in the first week of
May,” an adviser said.

Meanwhile, city residents were of the view that the Corporation was considering consulting with residents’ associations and others ahead of the budget. “As the Society had not had an elected official for four years, the civil servants presented the budget without any consultation. Now the Society has a council and we
hope that the finance committee organizes a session with the associations of residents to obtain their suggestions for the budget. Such efforts would ensure a better budget,” said R Manikandan of Crawford.

The planning committee, for its part, should take more steps to maintain existing parks and open gymnasiums, city residents said. “Since there was no council for a long time, the Corporation officials have built so many parks and open gymnasiums in the city. Therefore, the planning committee should stop the construction of more parks and ensure the maintenance of the existing ones,” said M Manikandam of KK Nagar.
